AG, a Gambia girl.

In late August 2010 we received an email from the Gambia, asking for help with a young girl called AG.
AG attends a school sponsored through Ngayen School Fund www.ngayenschoolfund.dk She turns 14 on October 4th 2011. She is in the Upper Basic school in her village Ngayen Sanjal in Gambia. The nearest big city is Farafenni.
AG was burned when she was six years old. In the early hours of the morning she was sitting alone by the fire, with a towel to cover her body when this caught on fire. No one was present to rescue her at that moment, and her right hand and arm got severely damaged. She cannot do anything with her hand, let alone stretch out her arm. It bothers her when people keep staring at her. She has been examined at Farafenni Hospital in Gambia and then at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in the capital Banjul. They cannot provide the surgery that she needs.

Children of Fire was asked if we could help AG.
Did we know how to improve her life? Yes.
Could we get a hand surgeon to consider the challenge? Unlikely. There are not enough hand surgeons in South Africa let alone the rest of the continent. We wish that they would train more. And we wish that they were all compassionate.

In May 2011 AG left for Freetown, Sierra Leone in order to be screened and possibly to get some kind of surgery for her right hand and arm. Realistically after all this time, function will not be restored in the hand or arm, but it would be possible to straighten the arm to some extent and to allow AG to wear clothes more easily. Over time, veins and arteries migrate into the wrong position and even with microsurgery or procedures like attempting tendon transfer, the chances of much more than an aesthetic improvement are slim.
Never though, underestimate the value of hope. Nor the value of caring and the educational value of travel. All these aspects will improve AG's life.

It is important to try to help all severe-burns-survivors within a maximum of two years of a major injury.
People who are interested in assisting AG or her school can contact the Ngayen School Fund, care of Ditte Marie Leigh, Overtoften 18, Genner, DK-6230 Rødekro, Denmark
