Emmanuel Lawal
Emmanuel Lawal is a 7-year-old boy who was severely burn at the age of 3 when his house caught alight.
He has what is known as a perineal contracture involving the scrotum and testes. Additionally he has a flexion contracture of the knees, bilaterally, meaning that his legs are effectively 'stuck together'. He is constantly in a 'kneeling' position because of this contracture. He is unable to stand up. Emmanuel has contractures of the right ankle as well as keloids on the umbilical region of his abdomen and on the base of his penis.

Because of his young age and the fact that his bones are still growing, if he does not get surgery soon his bones will be permanently deformed. The fact that it has been some four years since Emmanuel sustained his burns means that his young bones will have already sustained a degree of deformation and he is unlikely to ever be able to walk 'normally'. The sooner Emmanuel receives surgery, the less deformed his legs will be in later life.

Although the expertise to operate and improve Emmanuel's disfigurement and disability is available in Nigeria, his parents unfortunately do not have the means to pay for this, and there is no government assistance in this case. Emmanuel requires long hospitalisation, multiple reconstructive surgery, tissue expanders, synthetic skin coverings, blood and nutritional support, antibiotics and other drugs and rehabilitation/physiotherapy. We are asking for help for this child.

We have visited the Nigerian embassy in Pretoria who put us in contact with various politicians in Nigeria. The SA-based Embassy claimed that it was unable to assist us due to the child living in Nigeria.

By February 2011 we had had little response from the powers that be in Nigeria.

People who are able to help Emmanuel with multiple reconstructive surgeries should please contact
Children of Fire or:
Dr. Ben. M. Kejeh
Dept. of Surgery,
University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital,

Diobu, Port Harcourt.
