Esihle

In mid October 2010 we were forwarded emails from several directions, about a little burned girl called Esihle who lives in the Valencia Township area, near Port Elizabeth.

A man called Mike Kerr, who assists with township animal health care through the Animal Outreaches team, was moved to see a little scarred girl loving her scruffy puppy.

The email was distributed widely but the people on the ground were a consistent small crew, including a woman co-ordinating communications: Estelle Timms.

They had offers of clothes, shoes, treats and toys for the girl. Staff at Algoa FM radio station wanted to donate goodies for her and the puppy, Spur offered to throw a party for her and her friends and family, the manager of a company offered to help in his personal capacity by contributing towards school fees for the girl and food for the puppy; staff at other companies asked how they can help her,

Mike wrote: "For some reason I can't get this thin little child with all these scars on her face and body loving her scruffy little puppy out of my mind, so I am going back to find her, to see if I can make her life a bit more comfortable. You see she has never had a new pair of shoes or new clothes or Kentucky - all the things we take for granted.

No child should have to go through life with scars like this, but that would need a world of people to help, this photo would need to go around the world to find the person who can fix her, or maybe we can all change our profile picture on Facebook to her so she can get help, or if we can get her on Idols people can vote to save her life.

But none of that is going to happen. At the end of the day it's me and the other person who is reading this e-mail that can help change her life in a small way, because I can't delete them because I held them.

Never Give up on Life. MK

After Esihle came Tembakazi her friend, and then a younger girl whose face was burned with hot oil.

In November 2010, at least one of the girls is going back to the Dora Nginza hospital where they were treated in the past by Dr Linda Jones, to see if further surgery can improve their lives.

People who want to help in the Port Elizabeth area should please contact TimmsEM@telkom.co.za directly. If any of the girls come directly under the Children of Fire "umbrella", we'll update the website accordingly.

Esihle 9 years old.

Esihle was burnt in a shack fire her father died later in hospital due to the severity of his burns. She lives in a tiny shack with her mother. They have one single bed, one chair and a small stove and that's it. The fire happened December 2009 she has not gone to school since the accident.
