Samkelo Somi

Samkelo is going to have a new pressure garment sewn by occupational therapists at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in August 2012. He’s pictured here with his mother and with volunteer Anne.

Samkelo came to stay again for a couple of weeks in June and July 2011. He enjoyed going to Delta Park, Johannesburg to learn about water. He also attended a performance of Oliver Twist with the other children, at the National Children's Theatre.
Samkelo's keloids around the mouth area look as if they might be reoccurring, so we arranged with occupational therapists so that a new face pressure garment can be sewn for night-time and at-home wearing; he also needs silicon sheet to be cut into strips to wear on the scar areas in the "smile lines" each side of his mouth.
He is pictured here in the garden at no. 58 with his father.

Little Samkelo Somi enjoyed face painting in July 2010 on a cinema outing to Cresta, Johannesburg. He does not need more facial surgery but returns to Children of Fire periodically because he enjoys all the social and educational benefits that come from being a Child of Fire. He has firm friends in his age group and hopes to attend our holiday activity weeks around March/April and late September each year, as well as joining in with hiking adventures focussed on teenagers, when a youngster's programme can be arranged at the same time.

Samkelo Sole turned six years old in September 2008.

He was burned when children were playing with a bottle of thinners and matches, given to them by older children. The bottle exploded in Samkelo’s face. He had keloids (raised scars) that made him miserable. Now thanks to the efforts of Jo’burg Gen reconstructive surgeons, he has had the scars reduced on one side of his face. Further surgery will take place in early 2009.
