Hlumelo Dondashe

Nosihle, Perlucia, Hlumelo, Lebo, Clara with all the girls sleeping and only the almost-six-year-old awake. April 2014.

Bronwen Jones agreed to help Hlumelo Dondashe in 2009. We even sent people down to the Eastern Cape to fetch him. Social workers obstructed his placement. We encouraged. Chided. Got on with other cases. Picked up again where we'd left off. And finally a man from an advertising agency asked us to help. He described the boy. Oh, we said, that's Hlumelo. We've been happy to help for years.
He arrived in 2014. We took him to see lots of doctors. By end March 2014 he'd had surgery to both eyelids, to his mouth and to his cubital fossa.
He has SUCH a long way to go. We could have done so much more, so much better, if he'd come to us earlier. Some of the damage is not set in stone. It's set in bone. And that's hard to undo.
Sometimes it's impossible to undo.
But we'll do our best.
Thanks for help from Dr Laouel and from Professor John Fleming.
Hlumelo turned six years old on 9th April 2014.
